Having to operate in forest conditions requires equipment with high performance and flexibility that demand a lot from both the operator and their machine. Precision and power are equally important, and the demands on the equipment used are correspondingly high.
This is precisely why the choice was not difficult for forestry contractor, Harald Kaltenbach from Müllheim in Germany, who added a new converted Doosan DX210W-7 wheeled excavator to his fleet earlier this year. The Doosan dealer, Ummenhofer from Pfullendorf/Schönau, supplied the Doosan machine, with the purchase and conversion for use in the forest being carried out by the engineering company, Wirkstoff Technik from Bodman.
Good Arguments The new forestry excavator had to fulfill a demanding task profile: including delimbing, measuring and sorting the trees, plus pulling the felled trees from the stand and stacking them on the side of forest roads.
Thomas Firner, Managing Director of Wirkstoff Technik, recommended the Doosan DX210W-7 (incorporating an articulated boom with blade and outriggers) for the job:
“Doosan machines are very well suited for conversion and thus adaptation to individual requirements. The DX210W-7 also scores with a modern design that is both clean and clearly organized. In addition to all the functional advantages, Doosan also offers top service.”
Performance that Convinces Firner also cites the robust and well-dimensioned hydraulics of the excavator as another feature in its favour.
Harald Kaltenbach agrees:
“The combination of the high-torque six-cylinder engine and the high hydraulic performance, combined with the excellent price-performance ratio, convinced us.”
Best Conditions The Doosan DX210W-7 wheeled excavator is designed for long-term general purpose and heavy-duty use. Its Stage V compliant Doosan DL06V engine offers outstanding fuel economy. Stunning performance (with high torque at low speeds) is complemented by the highest hydraulic performance in this class – with a flow of 2 × 236 l/min for various applications. This provides additional power for all types of attachment and required work. In addition, numerous other smart features allow users to work comfortably and to easily operate the machine.
Perfect for the Forest The strong base offered by the Doosan excavator was specifically optimized for optimal performance in forests. A complete forest protection structure, using special, puncture-resistant mobile excavator tyres from Nokian was installed. Offering a wide contact area of 710 mm, the tyres provide stable support on uneven forest roads.
In addition, a radio-controlled cable winch with a cable reel from Schlang & Reichart was installed on the boom in order to be able to move felled trees directly from the stand. An auxiliary winch from HAFO is used to support the cable pull. At the heart of this mobile tree handling machine is the newly installed Koller P 60 processor head. It enables delimbing, cutting to length and sorting of the trees in one operation. Its gripper is used to stack the tree trunks.
Convincing Performance The converted forestry excavator has more than proved itself ‘on the job’.
Harald Kaltenbach is very positive:
“The entire machine makes a very robust, high-quality impression. It is very convincing in action. Advice and handling of the purchase and conversion was also top notch.”
The Kaltenbach forestry company from Müllheim im Breisgau was founded in 1995. Together with his team, Harald Kaltenbach offers services related to timber harvesting, timber moving, road construction, road repair, road maintenance, landscape conservation, mulching work, clearing, mobile sawing as well as excavation and transport work.
Wirkstoff Technik The company, Wirkstoff Technik from Bodman, was founded in 2015. The company carries out design and development work for large OEMs, but also builds individual machines for end customers. The direct connection to the end user is reflected in the finished construction. To achieve this, engineers, fitters, technical draftsmen and service technicians work hand in hand on these projects.
The high level of expertise in the areas of assembly, steel construction and welding work make it possible to develop accessories, attachments and complete solutions that optimize existing systems and machines.
Ummenhofer Construction Machines Ummenhofer Baumaschinen GmbH, founded in 2006 and headquartered in Pfullendorf, currently employs 25 people, four of whom work in sales and 14 in service. In 2019, Ummenhofer opened a new branch in Schönau. In addition to the sale, rental and service for construction machinery, Ummenhofer also offers its customers a wide range of workshop services for the repair, maintenance and care of commercial vehicles and construction machinery. In order to be able to offer high-level service on site for customers, the company maintains eight fully equipped service vehicles.
