As part of the Golf Links Road Upgrade, crews are conducting pavement works that will have significant environmental and sustainability benefits for the wider community.
The Foamed Bitumen Stabilisation (FBS) works on the Golf Links Road project is a pavement treatment operation which involves pulverising the existing pavement and mixing it with water, air and bitumen, expanding the material up to 10 times its original volume and improving the strength of granular road materials.
As a direct result, around 4000 cubic metres of existing pavement material will be saved from going to landfill and will be reused on the Golf Links Road Upgrade, reducing the need to import new materials.
MRPV’s construction partner, MACA, will deliver these FBS works across an approximate total of 2.8 kilometres along Golf Links and Grant roads within the scope of the project.
It will also lead to a significant 56 percent reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions on the Golf Links Road Upgrade in comparison to the cumulative energy, fuel and heating involved in the production and transport of bitumen throughout the traditional Asphalt Pavement process.
This reduction in CO2 and greenhouse gases is equal to around three million kilometres driven by an average passenger car or the yearly energy use of 88 households.
The FBS process is approximately 25 percent faster than laying traditional Asphalt Pavement because smaller amounts of new bitumen are needed to be manufactured and transported, hence fewer construction vehicles are involved in the process. This leads to shorter disruption periods and delays for road users.
The sections of the Golf Links Road Upgrade that are being built using FBS will be completed by mid-2022. This includes Golf Links Road between McClelland Drive and Garden Brae Court and in two sections along Grant Road from the Golf Links Road roundabout to Speedwell Street.
Supported by Ecologiq, the project is implementing Victorian Government’s Recycled First Policy which aims to integrate circular materials into transport infrastructure projects, making such initiatives business as usual as we work together to create a greener transport future.
Ecologiq works with the project team to optimise the use of recycled materials across the project.
The Golf Links Road Upgrade will make it easier and safer for road users to travel to Peninsula Link, Somerville, Hastings and Western Port Highway, and lower the risk and severity of crashes with the installation of new safety barriers.
The Golf Links Road Upgrade is expected to be complete by 2023.
